چکیده

Large samples of Field Horizontal Branch (FHB) stars make excellent tracers of the Galactic halo; by studying their kinematics, one can infer important physical properties of our Galaxy. Here we present the results of a medium-resolution spectroscopic survey of 530 FHB stars selected from the Hamburg/ESO survey. The stars have a mean distance of ∼ 7 kpc and thus probe the inner parts of the Milky Way halo. We measure radial velocities from the spectra in order to test the model of Sommer-Larsen et al., who suggested that the velocity ellipsoid of the halo changes from radiallydominated orbits to tangentially-dominated orbits as one proceeds from the inner to the outer halo. We find that the present data are unable to discriminate between this model and a more simple isothermal ellipsoid; we suggest that additional observations towards the Galactic centre might help to differentiate them.

The stellar content of the Hamburg / ESO survey ⋆ III . Field horizontal - branch stars in the Galaxy

We present a sample of 8321 candidate Field Horizontal-Branch (FHB) stars selected by automatic spectral classification in the digital data base of the Hamburg/ESO objective-prism survey. The stars are distributed over 8225 square degrees of the southern sky, at |b| 30 deg. The average distance of the sample, assuming that they are all FHB stars, is 9.8 kpc, and distances of up to ∼ 30 kpc are ...

Horizontal Branch Stars in the Galactic Stellar Halo

I review the properties of the Galaxy’s stellar halo, specifically as traced by horizontal branch stars, but with reference to and in comparison with other stellar tracers. I discuss the halo density profile, the variation in horizontal branch morphology with Galactic position, and the kinematics of halo stars in several regions of the Galaxy. I summarize the horizontal branch star findings and...

The Galactic Potential and the Asymmetric Distribution of Hypervelocity Stars

In recent years several hypervelocity stars (HVSs) have been observed in the halo of our Galaxy. Such HVSs have possibly been ejected from the Galactic center and then propagated in the Galactic potential up to their current position. The recent survey for candidate HVSs show an asymmetry in the kinematics of candidate HVSs (position and velocity vectors), where more outgoing stars than ingoing...

The Century Survey Galactic Halo Project I: Stellar Spectral Analysis

The Century Survey Galactic Halo Project is a photometric and spectroscopic survey from which we select relatively blue stars (V −R < 0.30 mag) as probes of the Milky Way halo. The Survey strip spans the range of Galactic latitude 35 < b < 88, allowing us to study the nature of populations of stars and their systematic motions as a function of Galactic latitude. One of our primary goals is to u...

A Catalogue of Field Horizontal Branch Stars Aligned with High Velocity Clouds

We present a catalogue of 430 Field Horizontal Branch (FHB) stars, selected from the Hamburg/ESO Survey (HES), which fortuitously align with high column density neutral hydrogen (H I) High-Velocity Cloud (HVC) gas. These stars are ideal candidates for absorption-line studies of HVCs, attempts at which have been made for almost 40 years with little success. A parent sample of 8321 HES FHB stars ...
